Boys, This One’s For You.

October 12, 2010

Recently I discovered that quite a few men read this blog (and no, not just those of homosexual orientation although you boys know you’ll always be my number 1!). This got me thinking about what they must be thinking about my taste and the general madness that is fashion. Obviously most people that come on here understand what I’m talking about but for a straight man, do they not wonder what on earth most of the women I feature are wearing?

This train of thought then bought me on to what I wear for a date vs what I wear for a meeting or what I wore during Fashion Week. I’ve always been a girl who dresses for herself but I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t often run back home halfway to the tube station when realizing that my drop-crotch Ann Demeulemeester trousers are probably not a good idea if I want this guy to fancy me. I have also always layered and swathed things three sizes too big for me. It’s just my style as I will never be the girl that is comfortable with exposing lots of skin, and on the occasion that I do, I like it to be a rare surprise.

This in turn got me thinking about what men like women to wear? So boys, here is what I ask of you; I would like you to have a good look at the images below and tell me which looks you think are the most attractive. I’m excited to see which ones you go for! Girls, I want to hear your guesses as to which ones you think the guys will go for…

Look 1: Feminine via The Sartorialist

Look 2: Sexy? via GFYS

Look 3: Oversized via Dries Van Noten

Look 4: Androgynous via The Sartorialist

Look 5: Boobs via GFYS

Look 6: Slouched via Garance

Look 7: Grunge via Daria

Look 8: Gothic via Jamie Bochert

Firstly, thank you for outing me to all my footie-loving friends that I read your fashion blog!

Are you sure that Jamie chick in look 8 isn’t a dude? Either way, she is a complete right-off. I like the girl in look 6 – very cute outfit and all round hottie.

Look 2. I can never say no to thigh high leather boots. And I’m gay….

Overall none of these girls or their outfits excite me at all

By proxy for Seth: look 6 for the baggy top but not the shorts with high heels.
look 7 because he understands it! None of the other images worked for him.

Ha, thanks Seth! I’m quite excited that he gets Look 7 because going by all other comments it looks like I’m going to be single for life – I obviously don’t get it!

    Look 1 by far…
    …next I would say 6 but only if pushed… after that 5 but only if I hadn’t got any for a while… x

as for clothing i’d say I like Look 6: Slouched via Garance, but as for the women, none float my boat

I think it totally depends on what the guy is looking for, if its sex then look 5 or look 2, if its a long term thing where he is going to take a girl home to his mummy, its look 6… if he wants a woman to be like his mummy then look 1 :)

over the years i have had many phases of fashion, i had a massively punk/grunge/goth phase and i can honestly say that men quite liked that (however i was hanging out in those kinda bars and PVC corsets and stockings are always going to get attention… ripped denim boyfriend jeans and dr martins not so much).

I still like grunge a hellofalot and also slouchy stuff and I feel that it can be attractive to men. they like imagining your body through loose tops, oversized shirts are always sexy to men.

I have also been to many places where i have had to dress up not unlike look 5 (less flesh showing than that) Although I have received male attention from it, I often feel its the wrong kind of attention. when I go out I want men to talk to me because i am approachable not because they want to fuck me.

In my opinion and experience, men find the most natural and relaxed look sexy. Men lack in confidence too most of the time and may find it hard to relax around someone looking like they are trying to find a footballer husband. They dont want someone who dresses like their mother, they like a bit of an edge and a bit of individuality. Men will never get cocoon coats, loafers or hareems or 3/4 skirts.

What men find most sexy is confidence and a smile :))

    right or wrong lads??

edit on my previous comment, they are all to skinny, I know skinny girls wear certain outfits better but if its about which girl I like then that comes into it

  9. October 12, 2010 1:28 pm

For me no. 6 just edges no. 1. Class can still be achieved in conjunction with sexiness. I like women to look like women – to many mannish touches deny a girl’s feminity.

Grunge/goth just doesn’t do it for me either.

Look 2 – I like the tightness of her jeans, the tight trendy jacket, the long kinky boots and showing a bit of skin from her stomach is a nice touch.

But remember, it always depends on WHO is wearing it and WHO is viewing it! For me, tight clothes on a woman is a key to sexiness!

Depends on what the guy’s style too I think. If he is into fashion or music or art or generally a creative type he might go for No.1 or No.6 but if not maybe No.5 or No.2? Just a guess; I’m gay haha and my favourite would have to be TV’s Mary Kate!

Ok, so …… I have been asked to comment on this by my other half and I have to say and it is an interesting one.

Today, I like 2, 6 and 7 however, when I was eighteen I probably would have gone for number 5 all the way.

Why??? ……. because at eighteen I was a different person and looked for different things in a girl ….. simple as that really! (I think you can get where I am coming from)

These days, I like subtle and sexy – so pictures 2 and 6 are cool, but I think it’s as much the girls in these pictures as the clothes themselves.

I also like number 7, but then again I like grungy / sexy because its interesting, edgy and a little different from the norm and to me that’s exciting because it leaves plenty for the imagination ……… a little substance, ya know!!

To round off, I think girls should wear what they are comfortable in when it comes to meeting guys, because lets face it, if all goes well, the clothes are going to be coming off anyway ;)

2!? oh lordy… it looks like some wierd white girl wannabe ghetto military rider dont know what i am just found a bunch of clothes and put them together. i need to educate my fella. apart from that i agree with what he says!

  13. October 12, 2010 2:33 pm

    Hahahahaaaa – ok then hunni!

Obviously, I think it bottles down to the girl underneath alot of the time.

As RaRa did mention, confidence goes a long way when it comes to a girl regardless of what she wears.

Confidence is sexy – and I think that goes both ways.

Honestly, from a guys point of view, none of them are particularly sexy. ‘Fashionable’ maybe, but not that attractive. Look 2s lower half is at least slender and feminine – However her jacket, and all the other looks all have a masculine edge to them – Large buttons, broad shoulders, baggy fits, lapels etc.

It’s the same reason most ‘non-fashion’ men can’t bear skinny jeans and super-fitted tops on guys, its the wrong way round: boys should look like boys, and girls, girls.

Look 6 is the nicest from a ‘walking along the pier on holiday’ perspective, and the only one with any real femininity. Look 5 is far too revealing – We want the suggestion of skin, not have it thrown in our face :D

      I always wonder…

if straight men had to pick an outfit for their partner or hypothetical partner, what would they choose for them?

answers on a postcard please :)

RaRa – Depends if we’re talking about fashion, or just looking good… If we’re talking about a casual outfit, I think most straight men would agree that the simplicity of fitted jeans, boots and a white t-shirt, maybe with a pair of shades, can’t really be beaten in the attractive stakes. Its an annoying thing to say, because it is so basic and anti-trend/fashion, but its true…

In my experience women’s catwalk fashion tends to be for and about the opinion of other women, and nothing to do what a man might think ;)

its interesting, 3 men i know say some fitted jeans and a nice top. I have to say im loving that answer, classic, casual and relaxed but still feminine .

look 6 every day of the week

  16. October 12, 2010 6:51 pm

1 and 6 for me. I like to see a woman who knows what works for her body and personality. Well done.

  17. October 12, 2010 6:58 pm

OK… the first problem with guys choosing which ‘look’ they find best out of these is that we judge on the individual girls’ appearances.. which may skew results. For example, girl 5 would undoubtedly look better in girl 8 ‘s clothes than girl 8 herself… so its hard to be objective – if you could have the same girl in each outfit that would be far more representative :-D.

Taking the above caveats into account… I think I like girl 5 the most here… but 3,4, 7 & 8 for me are a definite NO NO. But we all judge on more than what someone is wearing, clothes are merely one of the first steps in attracting attention and showing ‘what kind of person you are’ in a lovely, conformist way :-p.

Plus, it depends on scenario – if girl 5 came to e.g. a chilled DVD night with mates in that you may think she’s hot but may also think she’s a bit of a try-to-hard narcissist lol.

Get the same girl in each different outfit for more accurate/realistic results! :-)

    loving this post…
I showed it to my boyfriend, when seeing look 1 he said he had that same white jumper and has never worn it, asked me if id like to have it!
The looks he liked most were 6 and 7. He called 6 ‘style’ and 7 ‘nice for around the house’.
My favorite is look 6 also.
When asking him what he likes a woman to wear- he said: ‘nothing’… thats shahar for you :)

Look 6 is by far the sexiest and cutest.
She just looks so chilled and comfortable and I think that’s important in anything you wear.
    Good posts.
    Love your little sista xxx

I am bowled over by the response this post has received! Some serious food-for-thought here and despite most of you going for Look 6, I’m quite chuffed by the diversity of your answers.

In case any of you were wondering, my favourite is Look 3, but that’s just me ;)

As for jeans and a white t-shirt, it is classic and a clear winner for men but rarely expresses the individuality of a woman. Personally, women who are willing to break the fashion rules and have more of a blasé attitude when it comes to how they dress, well to me THAT is sexy.

Look 1, definitely. Then 6, and then 3.

    I think 5 might’ve got more votes if the picture wasn’t so…prejudicial.

  23. October 13, 2010 12:15 pm

    Nice blog!

In fallowing order I would say.

    Look 6
    Look 3
    Look 1
    Look 4

the rest doesnt suit my taste at all!

  24. October 13, 2010 7:27 pm

Well, here’s how I rated them Look 1: one star,’nice’ look 2: 4 stars, ‘sexy’ Look 3: 2 stars Look 4: “ugh!” Look 5: ‘ok’ Look 6: 4 stars cute/sexy Look 7: 4 or 5 stars very nice, cute/sexy too Look 8: No, no, no!!!

  25. October 14, 2010 1:29 am

My guesses would have been look #3 (it’s oversized but there’s a half-mile of leg on show, and there’s that whole “I stole it from my boyfriend’s closet after getting out of bed” thing going), #6 (I guess the casual+heels thing works, and doesn’t look too intimidating to guys?) and if it were tweaked just a little with a shorter skirt, #1 (the length of the skirt looks too prissy for a boy who’s looking to pull, as does the structure of the bag- but a few changes——–>gorgeous). Even #5′s dress might be a boy-puller if it didn’t have that cutout, I somehow get the impression that cleavage+underboob/almost-underboob might put some men off in a way that just cleavage wouldn’t.

Though I think guys might find #7 pretty appealing too, but maybe that’s just cause it’s Daria in grunge, not an ordinary potato like me.

    Shit, I’m rambling.
