Rooney Mara: How One Dress (and a decent stylist) Changed Her Career

December 21, 2011

I read Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and watched the original Swedish film adaptation. Do I care about the new Daniel Craig/Rooney Mara version? Not so much. But what I do find fascinating is how one girl (Rooney Mara) and one dress (Givenchy) can conjure up such an exciting press storm in a matter of days.

I’ve probably stumbled across the below image four times today amongst my daily reads and am still finding myself stopping to stare at it. Through the power of a decent actress, a great designer and a brilliant stylist (does anyone know who it is?) – a new “badass” star is born (perhaps because we needed someone to replace Angelina Jolie?):

Let us not forget what Ms Mara looked like before the Hollywood & fashion zeitgeist took a hold of her:

An organic change in style? No way in hell…

I had never heard of her before, let alone see any “before” pics. Holy hell! It’s like a teen girl who wants to rebel against her parents and is suddenly Goth overnight.
It’s just a movie roll…. so bizarre that she’s getting styled to embrace the character outside the film.
Oh, and the Swedish version did NOT need to be redone.

:) yap, fresh face, intriguing role, cool outfits, perfect styling – a star was born.
    Love the Prabal Gurung dress!

I read all 3 books and watched the original movie. I was very disappointed in the “original” movie. It left out some key parts of the book and changed things that IMHO should have been left the same as the book. They changed lines in the movie to make Lisbeth edgier and I, for one, did not like that. We loved her because of her strength but she also had a vulnerable side too that made us root harder for her. I think this version looks like they hit on the most important parts of the book and made it about the 3 strong stories… Mikael, Lisbeth and Harriet’s disappearance. They seemed to capture Lisbeth’s personality better.

a complete u-turn. i liked her before-look more, but now she’s definitely more recognizable.

TFS is speculating that her stylist is Ryan Hastings (he also works with Mia Wasikowska), but apparently he wants to remain anonymous.

And yeah, the change (from generic girly to, well, Lisbeth-like and kind of in character for this PR whirlygig) is so striking. I just wish she didn’t sound like such an entitled brat in interviews, 26 is old enough to have some tact about what you say.
